The history of the town comes from the far and mysterious past of a civilization born and bread by the Sea.
​The tradition is that when the barbarians invaded the North of Italy, the inhabitants escaped on the islands of the lagoon of Venice, creating the Republic of the Serenissima. The islands of Chioggia and Sottomarina were the 11th and 12th islands of the Confederation of the 12 islands of the lagoon.

La storia della città è legata a quella di Venezia dai suoi esordi, quando gli abitanti delle isole aderirono alla Repubblica della Serenissima.

During the 15th century Venice fortified the lagoon with forts to defend her islands.

Sottomarina's fort is called St. Felice and in summer it is possible to explore it!

Every first Saturday of the month the city organizes excursion to discover its walls and chambers..

Durante il XV secolo Venezia fortifica la laguna con roccaforti per difendere le sue isole.

Il forte ​S. Felice di Sottomarina è a tutt'oggi visitabile!

​In the June Medieval festival every year the city of Chioggia re-lives the War of Chioggia, when Genova and Venice fought for the dominion of the Sea (1379/80).

Although the town remained largely autonomous, it was always thereafter subordinate to Venice, whose influence is visible in the art and architecture of the city. 

Beautiful memory of the great past of the city, other than its churches and canals, is the Clock Tower of St. Andrea, the oldest in the World

​It was built in the same year of Salisbury clock, 1386, and from its top you can enjoy a unique view of the bridges and the palaces of the lagoon.
